Mukuyuni FCS (Farmers' Co-operative Society), situated near Kingatuani market in Machakos County, is dedicated to meticulous quality control and environmentally conscious farming. This cooperative includes 932 members, with 347 women, and ensures that women hold at least half of the seats on its management board. Celebrated for producing exquisite coffee, Mukuyuni FCS specializes in the SL28 variety—renowned worldwide for its resilience to drought, refined flavor, and versatility across climates. It is among the most well-known and well-regarded varieties of Africa. It has consequently spread from Kenya, where it was originally selected in the 1930s, to other parts of Africa (it is important in Arabica-growing regions of Uganda, in particular) and now to Latin America. The variety is suited for medium to high altitudes and shows resistance to drought, but is susceptible to the major diseases of coffee. SL28 is notable for its rusticity—a quality meaning that it can be left untended for years or even decades at a time, and then return to successful production.

Process Details
-Hand-pick cherries at their peak maturity. These cherries are transported to the wet mill, where they are carefully sorted on a patio.
-Following sorting, they pass through a pulping machine that uses fresh water to remove the outer fruit layer. The beans then undergo overnight fermentation, are thoroughly washed, and are graded by density.
- To complete the process, the beans are sun-dried on raised beds under close monitoring until they reach the ideal moisture content.
